PermaLink Sametime Servers16.08.2006 17:15
I just made a simple NETCRAFT search looking for hosts having "sametime" within their name. The list contains 29 servers but the important message is, that a high percentage of these servers do not require authentication, you can just use them to make online meetings.

PermaLink A Thinkpad X40 lost it's serial number08.08.2006 18:53
I had a problem with an IBM Thinkpad X40 not displaying it Serial Number, Machine Type and UUID. While you can ignore it when these informations are missing in the BIOS, there are other aspects. I found that the automatic software update feature does not work as well as some software products bundled with the Thinkpad as they will run on Thinkpads only.
I contacted the IBM hardware support and because of a three year onsite support contract an IBM specialist visited me to fix the problem. He had a special floppy disk with a program he used to flash the missing information into an EEPROM on the systems mainboard. Before you ask: This program is not available for download, you have to contact IBM hardware support if you face that problem too.

PermaLink Social networks08.08.2006 00:00
I started to work with social network applications on the web and focused on openBC first as it seems to be quite common here where I live. After some days I can say that:
  • the free account is about unusable and the premium account seems to be far too expensive
  • The Lotus Notes integration exists but is so bad I refuse to use it and declare it bullshit
There are alternatives on the web and I would like to hear if you can recommend any of them or others.

PermaLink Directory Links not supported in some situations07.08.2006 10:41
I always thought that Directory Links are a basic technology in Lotus Notes/Domino but in the last days I found that using directory links may be unsupported in some configurations.
In my case I worked with a customer who wanted to use roaming for a large number of users. He agreed to use the standard roaming directory which defaults to roaming. For performance reasons we decided to place the roaming data on a separate disk so we linked roaming to a directory on the other disk.
We soon found that we could no longer upgrade users to roaming users because the Admin Client failed with the error File does not exist on remote server.

A PMR was opened and the analyst soon found SPR SHEZ6Q9HTK. The bad news is that this SPR is currently on the status unsupported configuration.

I usually understand why some problems could not be fixed or are declared as unsupported configuration, but please can anybody tell me why this is an unsupported configuration (and I do not accept because it has not been tested, it is unsupported?

PermaLink The Lotus Notes password02.08.2006 17:09
Wouldn't it be nice to have a Lotus Notes password dialog that shows you when you have to change your password and when your certificate will expire?
I made a fake screenshot to impress what I am thinking of, knowing that there are situations where you can't show that information BEFORE you entered the password, for example if you are trying to retrieve the id from the person document or the roaming names.nsf if you are a roaming user. But in cases we have the id file locally, I think this should be possible, isn't it?

PermaLink The world of instant messengers is changing01.08.2006 17:23
While in the past instant messenger networks from AOL, Yahoo, MSN and others were complete separated from each other, this is currently changing. While some clients like Trillian tried to connect to multiple networks from one client, we are currently seeing the networks to connect to each other in the background (server to server).
IBM will ship Sametime 7.5 with support for AOL, Yahoo and Google. Yahoo Messenger is currently testing a Beta to connect to MSN. Skype is not in the news to connect to anybody else, they still use a proprietary protocol while the rest of the world moves to SIP.
