What happens if a kid finds that solving a rubix cube is not enough09/21/2009 21:11
Last Christmas my son, now 14 years old, got a robotic toolkit present. This is a video showing the result. I was honestly stunned by surprise.
He uses the robotic toolkit to move the cube. A webcam is linked to a PC to feed the algorithm. A Visual Basic program feeds the robot with instructions.
Sourcecode available on his website.

Need help: Anybody from Italy willing to help?01/29/2009 16:10
I need your help: my brother in law, living in Italy but not speaking italian has to cancel his ADSL connection because he moves to another address. I need somebody speaking italian to call the provider to cancel his account.
If you are willing to help me out please contact me on skype or drop me an email to christian(at)brandlehner.at
On my vacation in May I had time to read another book I would like to recommend. It is "Verborgene Universen. Eine Reise in den extradimensionalen Raum" from Lisa Randall (ISBN: 3100628055), the english original is named "Warped Passages. Unraveling the Mysteries of the Universe's Hidden Dimensions".
This book is a must have if you are interested in physics.
Another book I read was "Lotus Notes Developers's toolbox. Tips for Rapid and Successful Deployment" from Mark Elliott (ISBN: 0132214482). Mark Elliott starts by explaining the basics for Notes/Domino Developers: DesignElements, Formula and LotusScript. If you are new to developing web-applications with Domino you will find a chapter focused on that area (reserved $$-fields, WebQuery-agents, ...). The second part of the book is a collection of projects you may face in real world plus, showing how to solve these problems with Notes.
I think the first part of the book is addressing the very beginners, not worth reading for people who have been working with Domino Designer before. I am also missing any word on JavaScript and Java which may be relevant to people new to Domino but working with Java before. The second part of the book is a good exercise (or use the solution as toolbox) for Domino Developers and a tough challenge for beginners as it even covers repeating calendar entries in a selfmade calendar application.

my new racing bike arrived05/11/2007 11:25
One of my hobbies is biking. I am usually making tours with a standard hardtail mountainbike with sliks along the Danube river from Vienna to Tulln and back, which is aproximately 60 kilometers. You may argue that a mountainbike is not the preferred bike for a flat route like this and you are absolutely right! I wished to have a racing bike for that route and this dream has now come true after I ordered that nice bike at CANYON.
Looking forward to make my first tour to see the difference.

Five things you may not have known about me01/18/2007 01:14
I am *really busy* the last months but I was tagged by Chad and Vince to post five things you may not have known about me.
I still have no new car but as I need a car sometimes for shopping I joined a carsharing program. DenzelDrive offers cars at several locations all around Austria for a hourly fee plus a fee per driven kilometer, including fuel.

Which car should I buy?12/05/2006 15:56
As my old car is gone I am currently travelling by train and looking for a new (used) car. I am unsure if I should buy a new car or a used car for the same prize.
I have three favourites:
used Audi A8, three years old:
Audi A4:
Skoda Octavia:

three cars sharing two lanes result in a fiasco11/21/2006 16:21
Needless to add anything, have a look at the pictures. You will see that I found myself between two other cars while driving 130 kilometers per hour which equals 80 miles per hour.

New Digital Camera06/28/2005 19:17
I was making pictures with my CANON EOS 300D for about a year when someone asked me if I would like to sell my used EOS 300D. I thought about that and tried to find a successor of this good camera.
As I blogged before I am using Skype since a while. Today I was frustrated that I can't use it cause I don't have my headset with me. This brought me to the idea that maybe my bluetooth headset from Logitech, which I normally use with my Nokia mobile, would work with my IBM Thinkpad T41p. Guess what, it just works!

Vacation plans for New Years Eve / January 200510/11/2004 23:05
While everybody will try to visit the
Lotusphere 2005 I am heading towards Australia and New Zealand. I will
stay one night in Sydney / Austrialia before flying to New Zealand where
I will stay for four weeks.
I am currently looking for something special to do at New Years Eve in
Sydney but I have no idea... If you are from Sydney or you will stay in
Sydney make a comment and let me know what to do.
Update: After that stay in Sydney for NYE I will
travel from Auckland to Christchurch for four weeks. I am still planning
the route and have not decided if I rent a campervan, a motorhome or just
a car. If you are from NZ and have any valuable input please let me know.

Now on the way from Glacier N.P. to Yellowstone08/26/2004 07:23
We were at the Glacier National Park today. Due to a landslide after heay rainfalls we had to wait some hours to be released from or situation as the road was closed in front and back of us. The road fron West Glacier to East Glacier was not opened so we had to go back, drive around the mountain and go into the park again from the east as the most spectacular views are on the east side of the park. Due to the clouds we have seen no glaciers but a lot of waterfalls.
We are now in Helena, half way to Zellowstone National Park, let`s see how the weather will be the next days. :-)
Photos could not be uploaded yet as the hotels WLAN is secured (no WEP) by MAC-filtering and I am too tired to hack it so I just use the hotels complimentary internet access.

Just added my first pictures from the current vacation08/23/2004 16:59
We arrived in Seattle, Washington whithout
any problems. The flight was fine and we had no unexpected delays or problems
at the immigration. First surprise was that they did not scan our fingerprints,
I read before that this is necessary now but it seems to be limited to
citicens of a number of countries.
The weather in Seattly was just bad.
HEAVY rain that just stopped while were out for lunch. It was even too
rainy to take a photo as I was afraid to damage the camara if I put it
out.
Tomorrow I will rent a car and start
towards Glacier National Park.
My vacation plans / Seattle, Glacier NP, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Yosemite, San Francisco08/10/2004 22:40
I will start my vaction on the 22th of August and will return on the 12th
of September 2004. My wife and me we are still checking out quotes for
a rental car and planning "the perfect route" for the attractions
we want to see.
We will stay at the Hilton in Seattle for some days and at the Radisson
in San Francisco. For travelling we will rent either a Ford Explorer (Hertz
for about USD 1455) or a Chevrolet Blazer (Alamo for about USD 1300). We
hope we can sleep some days in the car without the need for a motel.
I do not have any idea about the rest of the vacation yet. If you are living
somewhere on my route and curious to meet tourist from old Europe so please
drop me a line.

A new digital SLR camera07/27/2004 10:20
I was blogging about buying a new camera some time ago. As always in real life something strange happens and so I changed my plans. Now this is my next attempt, I am going to buy the Canon EOS 300D SLR camera. I think in the states it is called Digital Rebel. You can buy this camera for a reasonable price at AMAZON in Europe: Canon EOS 300D digitale... or in the USA:

My birthday present06/26/2004
I had my birthday yesterday and my wife
had a lot of presents for me. My favorite is a Camelbak
to be used for biking. (Product
link) I used it today on my
favorite track Vienna-Tulln-Vienna along the danube river which is a total
distance of 60km (about 37 miles). I am using a Garmin
GPS 12XL to measure speed
and distance; this is much more accurate as a standard tachometer and very
cool. :-)

Looking for a destination for my next vacation06/15/2004 18:45
I will be on vacation in August/September
for three weeks. I am thinking about visiting the US east coast. Bruce
pointed me to Florida and NYC.
I made good experiences with a motorhome
in Australia but I think I should use a car and Motels in the states? Reservation
required for Motels or is it easy to just come along (especially at the
Keys).
What do you think? Any input for a tourist
from good old Europe? Any OpenNTF user group meeting during that time?
:-)

Test your english04/21/2004 23:51
This is my test result:
You are a MASTER of the English language!
While your English is not exactly perfect, you are still more grammatically correct than just about every American. Still, there is always room for improvement...
Digital Photo Camera, Konica or Minolta?02/27/2004 08:28
While I am developing an open source
Lotus Notes Application called 'Open Notes Picture Database' (ONPD), I
still do not own a digital photo camera by my own. I have to scan all my
pictures using a flatbed scanner or order my pictures including a CD with
the scanned images at the shop.
I want to be able to release pictures without having to wait till the film
is full, so a camera seems to be a must.

5th wedding anniversary today02/12/2004 11:20
Today it's 5 years I am married to my beloved wife Cornelia. I enjoyed the last years and I will be happy to stay with her for the next years to come.
Take a look at us (yes the location is beautiful Austria):
Yesterday evening, as I was heading towards home from the airport, I had to stop my car at an intersection. Unfortunately the driver in the car behind me was busily talking to his friend so he "forgot" to stop his car too. He crashed into my car! Both cars are damaged, especially the other car because it was smaller than mine so all lights were broken.
Nothing happened to me, the other driver or his friend! I hope the other drivers insurance will pay me to repair my car soon so I do not have any additional problems.

Murphy visited me on sunday11/12/2003 08:31
While I was enjoying the weekend Murphy visited my server to say hello. The harddisk crashed and my friends and me had to restore the whole server. For some strange reason I had a backup for nearly everything - except my own BLOG.
